Project Summary

The e-perion project aims to develop and market a comprehensive solution based on intelligent technology to assist in-home nursing care for the elderly, disabled, or otherwise fragile individuals. The project proposes an open solution allowing for the processing and integration of data obtained from various actimetric and medical sensors available on the market, in order to offer appropriate services within a comprehensive integrated telemetry system. E-perion will comprise a central system allowing for the collection of data from different devices, a platform that processes modelled medical knowledge and services, in association with a Call centre, a telealarm, as well as services to the person. All these services together should allow a greater patient autonomy, while ensuring a high level of security and assistance.

General objectives

The overall objective of the e-Perion project is to provide the necessary technological infrastructure to improve the quality of life of the elderly, disabled or chronically ill people. This initiative will provide services to help people with disabilities or chronic illness and older people to make independent activities of daily living within the home and have control over their biological levels.

Therefore, the project aims to research, develop and implement technological tools to use, based on technology platforms for older people with disabilities or chronic illnesses that prevent them from having some autonomy, promoting e-inclusion through ICT-based solutions. This initiative will provide a typology of innovative products to market, creating a new business segment. To achieve this objective, we have established the following specific objectives:

Scientific and technological objectives

  • Design and develop mechanisms of interaction with technology that is accessible and usable for older people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
  • Design and develop a system to install hardware in the home, allowing data acquisition from a wide variety of devices such as sensors and medical systems business, and the transmission of this data to a service platform or mobile device. Also include services such as video conferencing, receiving of messages and alarms, audiovisual content, etc..
  • Develop an expert system to handle and manage data from medical devices, including structured operational semantics. These semantics define how knowledge will be used to develop rational thought and machine learning for making decisions automatically based on data from the sensors.
  • Provide remote assistance services with a call center, an emergency response system, as well as home care services. The system must be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be managed by qualified staff, properly instructed, to fully satisfy customer needs (setting alarms, coordinating emergency response, handling applications for home care services).

Contribution to the development of Information Society

To contribute to the development of Information Society project will:

  • Promote e-inclusion to ensure equal opportunities for access and participation of people with certain chronic diseases in the Information Society.
  • Join the group of people with chronic diseases in handling the solutions. To promote training activities for these people in the field of computer, Internet access and use of new technologies.
  • Develop market-based solutions that allow people who need continuous monitoring to take an active role in society by increasing their autonomy and therefore, focusing on improving the quality of life. Providing quality, combining educational, cultural and lifestyle with advanced technologies that facilitate this group access to the technology offer.

Social objectives

To improve society, this project has established the following objectives:

  • Promoting the independence of people with chronic diseases, assisting in performing diagnostics. This project will directly affect persons required to keep a continuous control, without having to go to hospital. This project aims to develop non-intrusive diagnostics for these people and which are made through the use of ICT.
  • Promoting social support creating new opportunities that promote social relations of people with chronic diseases, increasing their participation in society.
  • Create opportunities for learning: promoting the use of technology in this group of people so that they can interact with technology and have the same opportunities as other people.
  • Contribute to the empowerment and improvement of key dimensions that affect the quality of life of people. Indirectly also to improve the quality of life for families of these people who often have to be caring and / or attending the sick. The development of such technological solutions can optimize the privacy of individuals with chronic diseases, without continuous monitoring centers or hospitals.

Industrial and Economic Objectives

They have raised the following industrial and economic objectives:

  • Create new business segment oriented solutions in the use of ICT for the group of people with chronic diseases and in need of daily checks.
  • Develop services and value-added products, intensive use of new technologies to meet the expectations and needs of these people.

As a result of the project, acquire industry knowledge and solutions based on ICT technology platforms to assist the group of people with needs or diagnosis as continuous, in user interfaces and working methods more appropriate for this group of people, etc. .
